What to Do If You Freeze on a Difficult Question

Even well-prepared candidates sometimes hit a question during the real exam that makes their mind go blank. Having a clear plan for this moment prevents it from derailing your entire test.

Recognize the freeze early. If you have read the same sentence three or more times without progress, or you have spent over 90 seconds on a single question with no clear direction, that is your signal to stop and reset rather than continuing to push through blindly.

Mark your best guess and move on immediately. Do not leave the question blank while you "think about it more" — commit to your best current guess based on what you understand so far, note the question number, and move to the next question right away. This protects your overall time budget.

Physically reset for a moment. A brief pause — looking away from the screen or paper for two or three seconds, taking one slow breath — can be enough to break the mental freeze without costing meaningful time.

Return only if time genuinely allows. If you have time remaining after completing the rest of the test, go back to marked questions with fresh eyes. Often, a question that seemed impossible minutes earlier becomes clearer once you approach it again without the same pressure.

Accept that a few points may be lost, and protect the rest. One difficult question is not the difference between passing and failing — but panicking and letting it affect the next five questions can be. Practicing this "notice, guess, move on" habit repeatedly during Readlify practice sessions makes it automatic rather than something you have to consciously remember under real exam pressure.
