How to Stay Calm During the Reading Test

Anxiety during the IELTS Reading test can cause otherwise well-prepared students to lose focus, misread questions, or run out of time. Here are practical ways to stay calm and focused for the full 60 minutes.

Expect some difficulty — it is normal. Every version of the IELTS Reading test includes genuinely challenging passages and questions. Feeling some difficulty does not mean you are failing; it means the test is working as designed. Reminding yourself of this in the moment can reduce panic.

Use slow breathing if you feel your focus slipping. If you notice your heart rate rising or your mind racing, pause for five seconds and take two slow breaths before continuing. This tiny pause costs almost no time but can reset your focus significantly.

Do not let one hard question spiral into panic. Getting stuck on a single question can trigger a chain reaction — panic about that question bleeds into the next few questions, causing more mistakes. If a question feels impossible, mark your best guess and consciously move on, treating it as a closed chapter rather than dwelling on it.

Trust your preparation in the moment. If you have practiced consistently, your brain already knows the strategies — timing, skimming, scanning, elimination. In the exam itself, your job is simply to execute what you have already trained, not to solve everything from scratch under pressure.

Familiarity reduces anxiety more than anything else. The single most effective way to reduce exam-day nerves is having already experienced the same format, timing, and pressure many times before. Taking regular Full Mock Tests on Readlify in the weeks before your exam builds this familiarity so the real test feels like just another practice session.
