Many students assume all four IELTS sections are scored the same way. In fact, Reading and Listening are scored quite differently from Writing and Speaking. Understanding this helps you set realistic expectations for your Reading band score.
Reading and Listening: objective, count-based scoring. Both Reading and Listening have a fixed number of questions (40 each) with clear right-or-wrong answers. Your raw score — the number of correct answers — is converted into a band score using an official conversion table. There is no examiner judgment involved; the scoring is mechanical and consistent.
Writing and Speaking: examiner judgment-based scoring. These sections are assessed by a certified examiner against detailed criteria like grammar range, coherence, and fluency. Two different examiners might occasionally score the same performance slightly differently, since some subjectivity is involved — this does not happen in Reading.
Why this matters for your preparation. Because Reading scoring is purely count-based, your preparation strategy can be very direct: the more questions you consistently get right in practice, the more predictable your real exam score becomes. There is no need to worry about "impressing" an examiner — only about accuracy.
The conversion table is not identical across every test version. Reading and Listening conversion tables can shift by a question or two depending on that particular test's overall difficulty, but the general band ranges remain consistent (see our separate article on Band 7 scoring for approximate numbers).
